This was quite the eventful night for Hoffman.

Blue Jays' Jeff Hoffman struck out 4 batters in 1 inning and still blew the save originally appeared on The Sporting News . Add The Sporting News as a Preferred Source by clicking here . Jeff Hoffman struck out four batters in the ninth inning for the Toronto Blue Jays on Opening Day.

He also managed to blow a game-winning save in the same inning against the Athletics . And in the end, Hoffman got to smile -- the Blue Jays walked it off in the bottom of the ninth, and instead of a save for his ledger, he was credited with a good luck pitching win. But about that top of the ninth inning.

First, Hoffman threw a two-strike pitch that was called a ball to Nick Kurtz, but catcher Alejandro Kirk challenged it, and it was overturned for strike three with the Blue Jays clinging to a 2-1 lead. The next hitter, A's catcher Shea Langeliers, launched a home run to dead center to tie it 2-2. Hoffman then struck out Tyler Soderstrom swinging, but a wild pitch got away, and Soderstrom reached first.

So while it was a strikeout in the book, it wasn't actually an out. No matter. Hoffman struck out Brent Rooker and Jacob Wilson both swinging to end the inning.
