Florida Attorney General wants the NFL to dump the Rooney Rule
Florida Attorney General wants the Rooney Rule demolished.
Since its inception, the Rooney Rule has been controversial. The rule was intended to ensure that all NFL teams interview minority coaches for head-coaching openings. But it appears that many NFL owners have flat-out ignored the rule.
As of now, there are only four minority head coaches in the NFL, down from nine in 2024. Some people think itโs time to abolish the rule. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier recently sent a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell urging the repeal of the Rooney Rule.
Uthmeir called the rule "blatant race and sex discrimination" and said that hiring decisions should be based on merit only. "NFL fans in Florida don't care what color their coach's skin is," Uthmeier wrote. "They care what colors their coach is wearing -- and that those colors are winning on the football field.
โ "The Rooney Rule and its offshoots are illegal in Florida. " The NFL said they reviewed the later and release this statement: "We believe our policies are consistent with the law and reflect our commitment to fairness, opportunity, and building the strongest possible teams," NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller said. Uthmeier will give the NFL until May 1st to not enforce the rule on the three NFL teams based in Florida, or face legal consequences.
