This is the first of many press conferences that will occur over the next couple of weeks, as Schiano mentioned that the media will have plenty of opportunities to speak with various assistant coaches on the team’s staff. The first thing Schiano talked about was how spring practices in the modern day are much different, and how they hosted a mock run-through on Tuesday to get all 53 new players and coaches up to speed with how they run practice here.

This practice was to teach everybody the flow of how they do things, so that when real practices started today, it flowed much more easily. Schiano spoke briefly about the quarterback competition. He talked about how each quarterback in the room is attacking it with a competitor’s mentality and mentioned how we will find out more about it when the media gets a chance to talk to offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca.

Later in the press conference, Schiano was asked about the status of DT’s Keshon Griffin and Zaire Angoy, who both applied for an extra year of eligibility. According to Schiano, Griffin has been cleared for another year, but they are still awaiting a final decision for Angoy, who has been cleared to practice but not cleared to play yet. Two position groups that Schiano seemed excited about in particular are the offensive line and the cornerbacks.

The reason for his excitement is that he believes both units have really good players coming up the pipeline. He also acknowledged the experience the team has returning on the offensive line before acknowledging that the cornerbacks are not in the same boat and that they had to go out and find experience in the portal. However, his excitement remained visible throughout the cornerback discussion because of the up-and-coming talent the room has.
