Vanoli’s done well but he’s still doomed

The mister’s done, at worst, an adequate job but he won’t be back next year, which is a bit unfair.

Paolo Vanoli has Serie A’s most thankless job. If Fiorentina avoids relegation, it’s because the team has too much talent to go down. If the Viola don’t survive, he’ll shoulder most of the blame, having been the boss for the majority of the season.

Despite spending a couple years in Florence as a player, the mister’s received less goodwill than any coach in recent memory. Despite that, he’s been a massive improvement on Stefano Pioli. The Piolus, as you may recall, departed after 10 winless league games, harvesting 0.

4 points per match. Vanoli’s hasn’t set the world alight in his 20 league matches but, had the team matched his 1. 25 points per match record this year, it would sit in 12th place with 37.

5 points, sandwiched between Udinese and Parma. That’s well below expectation for a team the dumbest people you know thought could challenge for the Champions League but it would be disappointing rather than catastrophic. That’s still probably unfair to Vanoli because pulling the squad out of its Pioli-funk wasn’t an instantaneous event.
