Hopkins, 56, would replace Gerry McNamara , the former Syracuse star who left Siena to become the head coach at his alma mater earlier this week after leading the Saints to the NCAA Tournament where they pushed overall No.
1 seed Duke to the brink before losing 71-65 in the first round. Hopkins, a San Mateo, Calif. , native is currently an assistant coach with New Orleans Pelicans after spending last year on the staff of the Phoenix Suns.
He was on Jim Boeheim’s staff at Syracuse from 1995-2017 and at one point was named “head coach in waiting,” but never became head coach because Boeheim didn’t retire until 2023. From 2017-24 Hopkins was the head coach at Washington, where he went 118-106 with one NCAA Tournament appearance before being fired. The Siena roster is in transition.
Sophomore guard Gavin Doty plans to enter the transfer portal (which opens April 7) after averaging 18 points and 6. 9 rebounds and being named First Team All-MAAC. Meantime, four-star point guard Ryan Moesch has received his release from Siena, per his agent Mike Simonetta of Life Sports Agency.
