Why Dylan Darling's nickname is 'Church Bells' thanks to Rick Pitino
Dylan Darling was the hero for St. John's in the Round of 32, hitting a buzzer-beater to win. It lived up to his nickname, coined by Rick Pitino.
Legendary college basketball coach Rick Pitino has St. John's back in the men's March Madness Sweet 16 for the first time since 1999, and guard Dylan Darling is largely to thank for it. Darling, a transfer addition from Idaho State and last year's Big Sky Player of the Year, hit the only buzzer-beater of the tournament so far as the Red Storm knocked off the No.
4-seeded Kansas Jayhawks in the Round of 32 on Sunday. Those two points were his first and only in the game as he finished 1 of 5 from the field. After the game, Pitino said that Darling — who he referred to as "Bells" — called his own number ahead of the game-winning shot.
“Here’s the amazing thing and it’s the funniest thing I’ve ever been involved with. So we’re going to run a play — but they’ve got fouls to give,” Pitino said, per Yahoo Sports . “And Bells comes up to me and says ‘run power’ which is a high back-screen pick and roll.
So I walk away and I say ‘OK, power. ’ I walk away and said ‘wait a second, he hasn’t scored a bucket and he wants to run a play for himself. ’ And I’m thinking as I’m walking ‘but he’s Bells.
