March Madness runs in the family: Mom’s in Sweet 16. Daughter’s in DII national championship

Dawn Plitzuweit coaches for Minnesota, but she has another team’s gear packed in her suitcase. On Monday, just a day after her Gophers defeated Ole Miss for a spot in the Sweet 16, Plitzuweit was on a plane, going to watch that other team play. This isn’t a betrayal.

Quite the opposite. Plitzuweit is loyal to the Gophers, but she has been a fan of a 5-foot-9 guard from Vermillion, S. D.

, long before she took the head coaching job at Minnesota. Her name is Lexi Plitzuweit, and she’s Dawn’s daughter. Lexi plays for Division II Grand Valley State, and when Dawn isn’t coaching her own team, she’s in full mom mode, cheering on her daughter.

The two are living their dreams together, but on separate sides of the country. Dawn’s fourth-seeded Gophers take on top-seeded UCLA in the NCAA Tournament’s Sweet 16 on Friday in Sacramento. Lexi’s Lakers are in the DII national championship game, which takes place on Saturday in Pittsburgh.

“Yesterday morning, (I flew) from Pittsburgh to Minneapolis to practice and then to Sacramento,” Plitzuweit said on Thursday. “I put on some frequent flyer miles, but it was certainly well worth it. ” After media obligations and practice on Thursday, it was time for Dawn to pull that GVSU gear out of her suitcase and position herself in front of a hotel room TV.
