The future Texas Longhorn leads the nation with 18 home runs. (Mikala Compton/Austin American-Statesman) DRIPPING SPRINGS — Leaning against his perch on the corner of the softball dugout, Dripping Springs softball coach Wade Womack has witnessed a fair share of "wow moments" this season.
There was a game-winning grand-slam homer that soared through a stiff breeze in a recent victory over Houston Clear Springs. There was another home run that was hit so hard, it reached the top of an old oak tree behind the outfield fence in Fredericksburg. "There were tree branches that came crashing down," Womack said.
Both wow moments were provided by an incredible force of nature: Tigers catcher Lorelei Gamble . According to MaxPreps, Gamble leads the nation with 19 home runs, an incredible high school feat for someone who has played in only 26 games. Exactly half of her hits this year have cleared the yard.
Gamble has been head and shoulders above her opponents since she began to play in area rec leagues when she was 7. Tall for her age, she played against girls who were three years older than she was to give her some competition. Womack knew he had a softball phenom when Gamble participated in a Tigers softball camp when she was 6.
