The fourth quarter proved costly for both the Cal and Stanford women's basketball teams, whose seasons ended with quarterfinal losses in the WBIT.

Gisela Maul, Lulu Twidale and Mjracle Sheppard each scored 15 points for Cal, but the Bears' pursuit of a WBIT semifinals berth fell short as Columbia posted a 74-68 win at Haas Pavilion on Thursday night. Cal (21-15), which had advanced to the quarterfinals with wins over Santa Clara and Kansas State, trailed by seven after the first quarter but eventually held a one-point lead on two occasions in the fourth quarter. Unfortunately for the Bears, after taking a 67-66 lead on a basket by Twidale with 2:06 remaining, they managed just one point the rest of the way.

Sakima Walker had 11 points for Cal, which was outrebounded 37-24. The Lions (23-8) parlayed 16 offensive boards into 16 second-chance points. Perri Page scored 24 points for Columbia, which will face Wisconsin in the WBIT semifinals Monday in Wichita, Kan.

BYU 76, Stanford 61: The Cougars used a 15-0 fourth-quarter run to take control against the Cardinal, who had trailed by one before the spree, in a WBIT quarterfinal in Provo, Utah. Stanford (21-14), which was coming off WBIT home wins over Loyola Marymount and Quinnipiac, was led by Courtney Ogden's career-high 26 points. Chloe Clardy added 17 points and Nuna Agara scored 12 but the rest of the Cardinal players combined for just six points and 2-for-21 shooting.

BYU (25-11), which will face Kansas in the WBIT semifinals on Monday, was led by Delaney Gibb's 27 points. This article originally published at Local college basketball: Cal, Stanford see women's basketball seasons end with losses in WBIT quarterfinals .
