ASU football brings in former NFL punter to aid special teams

Arizona State football finished second-to-last in the country for punting in 2025. To help with those issues, ASU brought in a 13-year NFL veteran.

It’s no secret that Arizona State ’s special teams have struggled over the past couple of seasons. In 2024, it was the kicking game . In that season, ASU went 56 calendar days without a made field goal — a stretch of six games.

Eastern Michigan transfer Jesús Gómez was brought in to help solve the woes the following season, and he did so, finishing 22-for-30 on field goal attempts. Now, it’s the punting game. Out of 134 eligible teams in the NCAA in 2025, ASU finished 133rd in net punting with an average of 33.

20 yards per game. The Sun Devils and coach Kenny Dillingham are well aware of the issues plaguing the unit, which is why former NFL punter Mike Scifres has been added to the coaching staff. The official title for Scifres is “specialists coach,” a new position created by ASU following the NCAA’s decision to lift limits on coaching staff sizes.

Scifres, under special teams coach Jack Nudo, has one sole job: coaching punters. That’s it. Nothing else.
