How the Islands boys soccer team edged Calvary Day to win region title
Islands won a battle between two undefeated squads as the Sharks edged Calvary to win the Region 3-3A boys soccer championship.
Two of Savannah's best boys soccer teams met Thursday night as Islands hosted Calvary Day in a battle of undefeated sides to determine the Region 3-3A champion. It was a defensive dogfight with both squads playing detailed and organized on the back line. Islands finally got its chance late when senior JJ Stein made a run down the left side of the field and drew a foul in the penalty box in the 71st minute.
He calmly knocked his shot into the back of the net for the only goal of the game as Islands edged the Cavaliers 1-0 to improve to 15-0 on the season. Calvary lost its first match of the year and is 10-1 on the season. "It was a back and forth contest for sure," Islands Coach Justin Brantley said.
"Calvary came in ranked No. 3 in the state in the Private School classification and we're No. 2 among the public schools in Class 3A ― so we knew it was going to be a barn burner.
We had some great play from our two center backs ― Sid Johnson and Alex Roma ― and we fluctuated with a plethora of guys as outside backs tonight with Langston Kana, Colt Lawhorn, Julian Roma and Zach Smith all playing their parts. " When Islands keeper Isaac Schultz made a save where he had to leave the front of the net, Calvary got to the ball and was looking to score. But Johnson came in and cleared out a ball that was headed in for a first-half goal in one of the biggest plays of the night.
