It showed up in their season opener against the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday, as they shut out the Reds in a 3-0 victory. Garrett Crochet earned the win in his first start of the season, holding the Reds scoreless over six innings. The Reds deployed a lineup featuring eight right-handed hitters to counter Crochet.
They were incredibly aggressive all afternoon, swinging early in counts. The Red Sox's ace was able to combat the aggressiveness by mixing each of his three fastballs, throwing them in the zone at a high rate for strikes and weak contact. His cutter was the star of his arsenal on Thursday.
