Matt Campbell commends Penn State safety

Penn State coach Matt Campbell calls Zion Tracy 'one of the best football players' he has coached, despite his past stats.

As spring practices get underway in Happy Valley, Matt Campbell will finally get to assess the massive amount of talent he has compiled in the offseason. With all of the transfers coming in combined with the returning talent who wished to stay with the program, Campbell is looking to build something special. However, it is one underrated returner who has caught his eye early on.

Zion Tracy has never been at the forefront of Penn State 's defense in the past couple of years, but he could be taking a huge step forward under Campbell as one of the leaders in the secondary. Unlike players such as Dani Dennis-Sutton or Zane Durant or even Zakee Wheatley, Tracy never truly made a name for himself. In 40 college games, he has only 80 tackles, three pass breakups, and two interceptions.

Still, Matt Campbell believes in his "elite" traits. "One of the best football players maybe I have coached, to be quite honest with you, in terms of talent, ability," Campbell said about Tracy this week during a spring football press conference . "I feel like every game, big moment, that guy has shown up and been an elite football player.

I think [Tracy] can be one of the best corners in the country, I think he can be one of the best safeties in the country, play nickel. He can do a lot. When you have a chess piece, like [Tracy], it gives you the ability to start to navigate the rest of the defensive structure.
