The Dallas Cowboys and Philadelphia Eagles are both in need of more help along the edge and a new trade rumor pertaining to the Cleveland Browns cracks the door open ever-so-slightly for a blockbuster trade for one of the NFC East foes.
According to ESPN's Field Yates , the Browns modified edge rusher Myles Garrett's deal on Tuesday, which will give the team more cap flexibility in the years to come. "The modifications have benefits to the team, as Cleveland now has more flexibility to create cap space in each year, and Garrett benefits with the modified option payments," Yates wrote. But some around the NFL believe this modification could set the stage for the team to unload Garrett via trade, per Browns beat writer Tony Grossi .
"According to two league sources, the out-of-the-blue contract modifications on a four-year extension signed a year ago essentially make Garrett easier to trade," Grossi said. “All this does is make him tradeable if he agrees to waive a no-trade clause,” Jason Fitzgerald of Over The Cap told Grossi. If the Browns do indeed put Garrett on the block, we'd suspect the Cowboys and Eagles will come calling, as both teams need more help along the edge.
Dallas could use another player opposite Rashan Gary, and the Eagles have a need for a pair of edge rushers with Brandon Graham's future up in the air and Jaelan Phillips leaving for the Carolina Panthers in free agency. The Cowboys were already involved in blockbuster trade talks this offseason when they tried to acquire Maxx Crosby from the Las Vegas Raiders before the Baltimore Ravens swooped in with a better offer. Before the trade deadline last year, Yahoo Sports' Charles Robinson reported that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman was "super hot" for a Garrett trade and was willing to give up three first-round picks to get it done.
