It was a beautiful night for baseball, but it was not all that pretty behind the plate, as Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried made short work of the Giants' lineup. Registering only two hits on Fried and then a single by Luis Arraez in the seventh inning, the Giants could only muster three hits as a team. According to The Athletic, this franchise was predicted to be a wildcard team at best, but after that performance, a different narrative can be said here.
Abysmal bats Of course, this lineup had to face off against one of the top pitchers in the game with Fried. That is a task in itself, as he diced this lineup to bits with extreme precision and command. Not to mention that their own starter, Logan Webb, was rocked early by the Yankees' powerful bats in the second inning.
That sucked the life out of the ballpark, and the Giants' lineup is not equipped to try and muster a comeback of that stature, this early into the season. Rafael Devers was able to get a hit in this one, but it wasn't the kind of hit to make any bit of difference. It is a long season to go, but for now, the questions have to be raised after the opening night letdown.
