Per Formula 1 protocol each of the 22 drivers—aside from the six who are selected for the FIA’s official press conference—hold an individual gathering with media in advance of each event. These typically take place in the hospitality units of each team and last for around 10 minutes.

Verstappen refused to begin his media gathering on Thursday at Suzuka until Giles Richards, the long-time correspondent from British newspaper the Guardian , left the room. Verstappen said “I’m not speaking before he’s leaving,” and the pair had a brief exchange in which the four-time champion confirmed to Richards that it related to a question that he asked following last year’s season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In the post-race press conference in December, after Verstappen won the race but missed out on the title by two points to Lando Norris, Richards asked Verstappen whether he regretted his incident with George Russell in Spain.
