Heading north: Wagener-Salley High celebrates Sims' signing for football
Mar. 25—WAGENER — Southern Michigan is on track to play a major educational role for Quentin Sims Jr. , with the Wagener-Salley High School senior having linked his future to football at The University of Olivet, near Lansing.
The Salley resident, whose parents are Quentin and Deena Sims, confirmed his commitment March 20 in a gathering at the high school. His time with the War Eagles has been as a wide receiver and defensive back. He also played basketball at the high school and joined the track program this year, as a sprinter and jumper.
Sims, now at 6-foot-3 and about 165 pounds, said he hopes for a career in sports — possibly in physical education or training. He has an academic scholarship. Blaze Gillespie, who was the War Eagles' head football coach in the 2024 and 2025 seasons, offered some insight on Sims' strengths.
"He cares about his schoolwork. He's always done a decent job without having someone ... have to be on top of him ...
He's always been self-driven," Gillespie said. In terms of athletic and Olivet, Sims "has got all the tangible pieces to be special," Gillespie added. "Maybe this is the place for him is the place for him for four years.
