Lewis Hall says he has been closely watching England’s left-backs while not in senior squad Lewis Hall says he has been studying England’s left-backs while he was not in the senior squad to prepare himself for when he got his opportunity. Hall has been named in England’s 35-man squad – the first time he has been called up by boss Thomas Tuchel following an impressive season for Newcastle. The 21-year-old says it is something he has long been working towards, and believes he already has a good idea of what is going to be asked of him.

“Obviously there’s been times where maybe I haven’t been in the squad. I’ve not been playing regularly, so I can understand it and things like that,” he explained. “But I’ve always watched the international games, especially the ones in September, October, November, because I always had that aim to be here in the camp now and I always wanted to sort of watch the team play and watch the style that the team played, so then if I was selected for this camp and I was able to get on the pitch, I’d have a bit more of an understanding of the way that the team wanted to play.

“And yeah, I think that’s the way I went about it. I always watched the games and watched the player who was playing in my position and what I thought he was asked to do. I’d take that information in and sort of store it for times like now when I’m in the squad.
