Bregman, 31, signed a $175 million five-year contract with the Cubs in January—but he's still committed to his Arizona hometown.

The Chicago Cubs ' new recruit Alex Bregman has admitted that he has no plans to quit his home in Arizona—even after signing a $175 million contract with the Illinois -based team that will see him based out of the Windy City for the next five years. Bregman, 31, sparked huge speculation about his future in the MLB when he chose to opt out of the remaining two years on his contract with the Boston Red Sox to become a free agent. Many suggested that he was angling for a position with the Arizona Diamondbacks .

Having based himself out of Scottsdale, AZ , for many years—buying a house in the area where he now lives with his wife, Reagan , and their two children, Knox and Bennett —it seemed only natural that Bregman would sign with his home team. But the third baseman threw a major curveball in January when it was announced that he had signed a huge contract with the Cubs, a decision that saw him and his family relocating to Illinois, where they will reside for the entirety of the MLB season. Yet Bregman has now revealed that—while he is excited for his future with the Cubs—he has no plans to walk away from Arizona, telling the Wall Street Journal that he and his wife will retain their Scottsdale home and continue to use it as their primary residence, living in Chicago only for the duration of the season.

As for what he was looking for in his ideal home in the Windy City, Bregman admitted he had just one major ask: a backyard with ample space for him to play baseball with his children, who are already exhibiting a keen passion for the sport that has turned their father into a star.

"When we’re shown a property, I walk straight to the backyard to see if there’s room to play baseball with the kids. Reagan looks at everything else," he joked. Though Bregman was born and raised in New Mexico, where his father, Sam Bregman , is now running for governor, he revealed that his home in Scottsdale has ties to the property where he grew up.
