Southland boys basketball primed for first state tournament run
Mar. 25—ADAMS — When the Southland Rebels set foot on the court at Target Center this week, they will be the school's first boys basketball team to do so. After they won the first section title in program history — bringing home the Section 1, Class 1A championship plaque with a win over Lewiston-Altura on March 12 — the Rebels now have the opportunity to play on the biggest stage yet.
Seeded fourth, the Rebels (28-1) will take on No. 5 Hills-Beaver Creek (27-3) in the Class 1A state quarterfinals at 1 p. m.
on Thursday in Minneapolis. "I think it's going to be amazing, walking in there for the first time, where the Timberwolves play, and we get to play there, too," 6-foot-5 junior center Ethan Schammel said. "It's going to be pretty cool.
... It's amazing that we're actually going (to state). This is something we've always dreamed of.
It's never happened, which is crazy. " Southland's juniors are sure to lead the charge during the state tournament as they have all season. At the forefront are 6-foot-3 forward Henry Wiste, 6-foot-1 point guard Tate Goergen and Schammel, who averages 14.
