Kyla Abad was hit by pitch to lead off the frame. With one out, she stole second base. Serenity Horswill swung at strike three, but the ball popped out of the mitt of Punahou catcher Jamie Shimokawa.
Abad took off for third base while Shimokawa fired the ball to first base, but the throw sailed over everyone and Abad scored easily to give Maryknoll the lead. That was enough to eke out the win even though Punahou left the bases loaded in the fourth and fifth innings, and stranded the potential tying run in the sixth and seventh frames. “This game was full of those almosts — almost here, almost there.
