He wasn’t feeling well at Indian Wells, where he went out early against Learner Tien, who is also American. Shelton, now world number nine, said he was over the worst of it before the Miami Open.

It’s an event he hadn’t done particularly well in before. But even after feeling better, Shelton lost to Alexander Shevchenko in his first match in Miami. Former Wimbledon semi-finalist Sam Querrey has since weighed in on whether there’s any reason to be concerned about him.

Even though March didn’t go to plan, Sam Querrey believes Indian Wells and Miami can be viewed as outliers and expects Shelton to find his rhythm again once the clay season starts. “I did not watch this [his defeat] but Ben still throws in some of those tough losses or stretches during the year but I feel like Ben has these massive peaks like seven times a year, basically at every major you trust him to play well and then three or four other times, Dallas or wherever it is, he just plays huge tennis,” Querrey said on the Nothing Major Podcast.

“In my opinion it’s nothing to worry about. He was sick. I always thought Miami was tough to play in.
