Report: UNC fires Hubert Davis after five seasons
North Carolina has reportedly fired head coach Hubert Davis after five seasons in charge of the Tar Heels.
The Hubert Davis era at North Carolina has come to an end. According to ESPN , the Tar Heels’ head coach was fired Tuesday night after six years in charge of the UNC basketball program. This comes less than a week after the Tar Heels were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by VCU, a complete collapse by Davis’ team in which they held a 19-point lead.
A Tar Heels’ player from 1988-92, Davis followed in the steps of legendary coach Roy Williams and had his moments, leading North Carolina to the national championship game in 2022 by beating rival Duke in the Final Four in Mike Krzyzewski’s last game in charge of the Blue Devils. The Tar Heels also won the 2024 ACC regular-season title, earning Davis ACC Coach of the Year honors, but fans and boosters had grown impatient in the last two seasons, especially after back-to-back first-round NCAA Tournament exits. Following the 2022 run to the title game, UNC struggled in 2022-23, finishing 20-13 (11-9 in ACC play) and was not given a bid to the NCAA Tournament.
