Cortland sweeps 3-game set from Plattsburgh
CORTLAND — The Plattsburgh State baseball team had a golden opportunity to break a long losing streak against SUNYAC power Cortland State on Sunday. The Cardinals (9-5, 0-3), however, couldn’t close the deal. Plattsburgh ended up dropping a three-game set to the Red Dragons (10-6-1, 3-0) — 11-1 in seven innings and 14-8 Saturday, and 14-10 on Sunday when the Cardinals couldn’t hold a 10-8 lead in the eighth inning.
It was a tough weekend for the Cardinals’ pitching staff, which allowed a combined 39 runs in 23 innings. Cortland has now beaten Plattsburgh 42-straight times, with the last Cardinals’ win coming in 2012. Plattsburgh will look to get back on the winning track when it plays a three-game conference set at Fredonia this coming weekend.
SATURDAY CORTLAND 11 PLATTSBURGH 1 (7) The story of the game was former Plattsburgh High School standout Warren Miller, who stymied the Cardinals for 6. 1 innings in getting the win. The lefty allowed just two hits, two walks, one run and struck out eight while improving his record to 2-0 on the season.
The Red Dragons scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back. Tyler Martin accounted for two of Plattsburgh’s three hits with a single, double and RBI. Marc Cancelliere added a single.
CORTLAND 14 PLATTSBURGH 8 Plattsburgh got off to a great start in the contest by scoring five runs in the top of the first inning. But Cortland rattled off the next 14 runs to build a 14-5 lead going to the ninth. Talon Elkins rapped four hits, including a home run and triple, for the Red Dragons while Nolan Smith added a home run, single and four runs driven in.
