Florida hopes to extend Todd Golden amid rumors of blue-blood openings
With a pair of blue-bloods potentially set to open, the Gators are reportedly trying to get ahead of it by extending the 2025 national title winner.
Amid rumors of potential openings at blue blood programs, Florida is trying to lock up 2025 national championship-winning coach Todd Golden. According to a report from Mark Long of the Associated Press, UF athletics director Scott Stricklin is looking to sign Golden to another contract extension. It would presumably give the 40-year-old his third raise in as many seasons.
Golden's salary was boosted to $6. 1 million after winning the title last season, making him one of the highest-paid coaches in college basketball. โWhen we have talented, successful coaches, weโre going to do everything we can to make sure they know that they are appreciated at the University of Florida ,โ Stricklin said, per Long.
โWeโve given Todd new contracts each the last two years. Heโs a priority for the University of Florida, and weโre going to treat him as such. โ Two premier college basketball jobs, Kansas and North Carolina , have been the subject of rumors about potential openings.
Longtime Jayhawks coach Bill Self has long been rumored to be considering retirement, while Hubert Davis' future is reportedly in serious jeopardy after another early tournament exit for the Tar Heels. Golden's name has come up as a potential target for either, should they open. Per the terms of Golden's extension from last season, he would owe the school $16 million if he left for another job before April 16.
