New England signed former Chicago Bears safety Kevin Byard III to a one-year deal worth $7 million. Zoltรกn Buday of Pro Football Focus named the Byard signing his favorite Patriots move of the offseason. "The Patriots lost Jaylinn Hawkins in free agency but were able to replace him with Byard, who is still able to play at a very high level despite likely not being a long-term answer at the position," Buday wrote on Tuesday.

"Byard ranked among the top 25 safeties in PFF overall grade in each of the past five seasons. He led the league with seven interceptions last season and ranked eighth in PFF run-defense grade (82. 6).

" The 32-year-old safety had an outstanding season with the Bears last year, earning a spot in the Pro Bowl and playing a key role in helping Chicago secure the NFC North title. Byard has a connection to New England's head coach, Mike Vrabel, as he played under him from 2018 to 2023 during Vrabel's tenure as the Tennessee Titans head coach. New England's defense might be a key factor in its potential return to the Super Bowl this season, and Byard could play a significant role in that success.
