Lavonte David took his time to come to his decision on the 2026 season and he chooses to start his journey to Canton and retire from the NFL.

The Bucs have enjoyed having the multifaceted Nebraska Cornhusker in the middle of their defense for the last 14 seasons. Now, they will begin a new chapter as linebacker Lavonte David has made a decision on the future of his playing career in the NFL. Ahead of a press conference on Tuesday, March 24, Lavonte David announced he will be stepping away from the game of football.

His 14 seasons in the NFL all came with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a feat that is rare in sports anymore, where a player plays an entire career with one squad. For Bucs fans, this is yet another burn to the soul in an offseason that is full of them. Earlier in free agency, they lost Mike Evans to the San Francisco 49ers, who was also a long-time mainstay, and before that, they kept head coach Todd Bowles.

Meanwhile, the team has seen others in the division make drastic moves to get better, while the Bucs are left picking up the pieces once again. What the Bucs lose in David retiring is an All-Pro and Pro Bowl linebacker. He is among the best defenders in the team's history, and that means putting him in with the likes of Warren Sapp, Derrick Brooks, John Lynch, and Lee Roy Selmon.

David seems destined to finish his career in the same place they all did, which is being enshrined in Canton, Ohio. For now, though, he can enjoy some peace in the Florida sun. This article originally appeared on Bucs Wire: Lavonte David rides off into the sunset and retires after 14 seasons
