The first week of NFL free agency saw plenty of big, logical deals. But a few threaten to backfire in a significant way.

The first two weeks of the 2026 NFL free agent period has come and gone, doling out nearly $3. 5 billion in total contract value in the process. Some of these deals were big money contracts for proven stars.

Many more were modest pacts for players who could be under-the-radar bargains . Today, however, we're talking about the deals that could end in regret. These are the expensive contracts for players who are either being paid for past performance that is no longer there or for a future leap to All-Pro status despite good-not-great resumes.

Who assumed the most risk with their early free agency moves? Bengals sign DL Jonathan Allen for two years, $25 million ($7. 5 million guaranteed) On its surface, this looks like a win for Cincinnati.

The Bengals needed a win-now presence who could boost a limited pass rush likely to only get worse with Trey Hendrickson's departure. Thus, they added a two-time Pro Bowler coming from one of the NFL's most aggressive defenses. But Allen's name value doesn't reflect what we've seen on the field in recent years.
