Lady Lions HC Tanisha Wright details plan to develop WNBA talent

New Penn State Lady Lions head coach Tanisha Wright explained how she’ll help her players create WNBA-level habits.

Penn State’s women’s basketball team came to fruition 45 years ago and they were instantly one of the best teams in the nation. There were a few blips on the radar, but they were largely dominant for well over 30 years. Carolyn Kieger had been leading the charge for the last seven seasons, but with just one of those years producing a winning record, the school decided that it was time for a change.

Enter Tanisha Wright, the new coach of the Lady Lions , who played her college ball for the program from 2001-2005 before heading to the WNBA. She had a bit of head coaching experience in the pros, as well as a decorated career as an assistant. She will now bring some of that experience back to Penn State, where she hopes to develop her players enough for them to make it to the next level.

When asked by reporters how she plans on helping the Lady Lions achieve their dreams, Wright said , “When you see pro players, they didn’t get there overnight, they took it one day at a time, one percent better, and I think that’s the approach that we’ll have to take. ” The sports world has seen countless athletes succumb to the pressure that comes with being a high-level recruit or a perceived generational talent, so Wright’s plan seems to focus on remaining calm and blocking the outside noise. The Penn State legend has a lot to juggle with a rapidly changing college landscape, pressure to succeed, and a few players who want to make the leap to the pros.

It will not be an easy job, but Wright is more than equipped to handle the hardships that come with it. Follow Nittany Lions Wire on X and Facebook . This article originally appeared on Nittany Lions Wire: Tanisha Wright plans to bring WNBA mindset to Penn State Lady Lions
