ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO) โ€” A group of students at Keith Country Day School placed first in the IHSA state championships for a scholastic bowl over the weekend. It is the first time they won state.

Three students made the all-state team. They treat quiz bowl just like any other sport. The team practices every Friday after school and had additional practices for big competitions.

History teacher, Jim Schoepski who helps out, says the practices are kind of like games. โ€œSo the coach gets rounds that they find online, usually through the NAQT website. You go back and forth, and practice rounds, then talk about strategy as well,โ€ said Schoepski.

Each team member can focus on specific categories like geography, history or literature. Some students sharpen their skills outside of practice. โ€œI think a majority of it comes on my own.

So, trying to read those like novels and books and stuff like toss up and then also just reading old questions so you can sort of see patterns, said sophomore, Aatman Shah. His teammate, Merrick Meyer does the same. โ€œI go home, go over questions myself, read them, and go through the material that maybe I donโ€™t know enough of,โ€ said junior, Meyer.
