As questions swirl about the future of Hubert Davis, UNC students say it's time for a change
AP The questions surrounding Hubert Davis' future as North Carolina's men's basketball head coach have become a hot topic on the university's campus, where students say they're ready for a change. WFMY News 2 spoke with students about their thoughts on the situation in Chapel Hill on Monday, less than a week after UNC's first-round NCAA Tournament loss to No. 11 seed VCU in Greenville — a game in which the sixth-seeded Tar Heels blew a 19-point lead before falling 82-78 in overtime.
Freshman Ben O'Buch didn't mince words. "It's great that we have a UNC coach," O'Buch said. "He's not meeting the UNC standard.
" O'Buch said his frustration goes beyond one tournament exit, pointing to the program's overall trajectory under Davis. "You win two NCAA Tournament games in four years — it's not enough for UNC," he said. "I wish him the best of luck in another program.
I would not be mad if he's gone. " Fellow freshman Grace Jersey, a Greensboro native, said her college experience had been wrapped up in Tar Heel basketball — making last week's first-round collapse all the more difficult. "I had high expectations, but stuff happens," Jersey said.
"Honestly, just being out in the first round, I was not expecting that. " Jersey stopped short of calling for Davis' firing but acknowledged the program may need to move in a new direction. "I do think we definitely need to up the coaching skills for sure," she said, "and if that means we need a new coach, I feel like that probably is the best look for the future.
