Petoskey's Haidyn Wegmann sacrifices final athletic seasons for West Point dream
Haidyn Wegmann knows all about sacrifice for the bigger picture. With a future at West Point ahead, her final year has come with some major decisions.
PETOSKEY — The starting point of making sacrifices for her future was already well underway for Haidyn Wegmann. The Petoskey senior and athletic standout long came to grips with the fact that to achieve what she wanted, her senior year path wouldn’t look like everyone else. And she was just fine with that.
But, there would be another sacrifice to make, one that became visible to the teammates she’s grown up with and the parents and fans that have watched her star on the basketball court and soccer field throughout her career. The sacrifices began when Wegmann made the decision to pursue a future at the United States Military Academy at West Point and they came in bunches. “It’s been like over a year-and-a-half, two-year long process of all West Point stuff,” Wegmann said.
“About a year ago I got into it all. I went to some summer things. ” That process has been a long one.
It included that summer leadership experience at West Point, a mixture of classroom and military training that you have to be accepted into. Wegmann was, and that’s where she got hooked. “(Summer leadership) is where Haidyn knew what she wanted and it’s also when she decided that being a future military officer was more important to her than anything else,” Kallie Wegmann, Haidyn’s mom, said.
