Monday Headlines: Dissaponting season ends and Mark Pope is now on the clock

Yahoo Sports

Kentucky basketball saw their season come to an end on Sunday when they were quickly blown out by the Iowa State Cyclones, 82-63. Despite leading for a decent portion of the first half and only trailing by one point going into the second period, it took hardly any time at all for the Cyclones to jump on the Wildcats and quickly dismantle any hopes head coach Mark Pope and his team had of advancing to the Sweet Sixteen. Iowa State was absolutely relentless on defense and that transitioned to high percentage shots on offense.

Following a Round of 32 exit and a season that was far less than stellar, there’s already been a ton of rumblings on Pope’s future and what the UK program needs to do moving forward. National writer Dan Wolken had the following piece on Pope officially being on the clock and only having one year to prove he can successfully do the job at a high level. After an inept loss to the kind of coach you could easily envision at Kentucky, Mark Pope is now on the clock.

He has one year to get it right. Column for @yahoosports https://t. co/0kix4H3g1b — Dan Wolken (@DanWolken) March 22, 2026 Kentucky spent a rumored $22 million in NIL money this season with a large portion of those funds being spent on several players who mostly underachieved.

Pope also doesn’t have any recruits for next season, which is beyond a red flag considering the resources he has at his disposal. Pope’s first season in Lexington was a nice success and maybe he eve overachieved, setting himself up for higher expectations this season. Fair or not, he’s certainly on the “hot seat” as Kentucky transitions into next season.
