It did not take long at all for the Bavarians to get things going, with only three and a half minutes gone when Giulia Gwinn whipped in a cross for Pernille Harder to score.
Things went from bad to worse for Essen when captain Jaqueline Meißner got sent off for a last-ditch challenge on Franziska Kett. The resulting free kick saw Linda Dallmann score a header from close range. Dallmann thus celebrated her recent contract extension.
All of the above happened in the opening nine minutes of the game. However, despite being a player up early on, Bayern did not immediately put Essen to the sword. Rather, they took a more reserved approach, possibly looking ahead to their midweek Champions League clash against Manchester United.
Halftime came and Bayern were only(? ) two goals to the good. But a player disadvantage will cost a team dearly against the current Bayern side, and it was only a matter of time before the visitors started scoring again.
