Watch: Benches clear in CMU-Toledo baseball game after pitcher's hard tag
The incident occurred in the top of the seventh inning of a game Central Michigan won, 6-5 in 11 innings in Mount Pleasant.
It was a bit chilly for baseball Sunday in Mount Pleasant. But things still got heated between two Mid-American Conference rivals. Benches cleared late in the game between Central Michigan and Toledo after things got a bit physical on a grounder to first base in a game the Chippewas eventually won in walk-off fashion, 6-5 in 11 innings, at Theunissen Stadium.
The incident occurred in the top of the seventh inning when Toledo's Luke Walton hit a slow chopper up the first-base line. It was fielded by Central Michigan relief pitcher Max Hammond, a left-hander from Reed City, who applied the tag a little too hard for Walton's liking. In making the tag, Hammond delivered a hard, two-armed shove of Walton, who tumbled to the ground before getting right back up and appearing to have some words with Hammond.
Walton was intercepted by CMU junior first baseman Nathan Ball (Bay City), before players from both benches poured out onto the field. The clip of the incident quickly made the rounds on social media. There didn't appear to be any more major altercations, beyond some light shoving, during the benches-clearing incident.
Both Hammond and Walton were ejected, as was an unidentified player from Toledo, according to a Central Michigan athletic department spokesperson. A message from The News to Central Michigan head coach Jake Sabol wasn't immediately returned Sunday. It wasn't immediately clear if there was a history between Hammond and Walton.
