FSU softball sweeps Cal with run-rule victory
The FSU softball team completed a series sweep of California on Sunday with a 9-1 victory.
The No. 10 Florida State Seminoles softball team completed its sweep of the California Golden Bears on Sunday with a 9-1 win at JoAnne Graf Field in Tallahassee, Florida. FSU has won its last 17 games and is now 28-4 overall and 6-0 in ACC play.
The Seminoles outscored them 30-3 in the three-game series. FSU opened the scoring in the second inning as Makenna Sturgis started a one-out rally with a walk and scored on a Marin Heller two-run homer. Hayley Griggs walked and Isa Torres singled to keep it going before Jaysoni Beachum drove in Griggs with a single.
Shelby McKenzie capped it off by scoring Torres with a sacrifice fly, putting FSU up 4-0. Cal got one run back in the top of the third thanks to two doubles off of Ashtyn Danley before Makenna Reid got a flyout to strand the bases loaded. The Golden Bears had six hits in the game, working one walk and striking out six times.
The Seminoles offense kept it going in the bottom of the inning and took a 5-1 lead on a sacrifice fly from Sturgis, scoring Kennedy Harp, who led the inning off with a triple. They blew the game open in the fourth inning when Harp singled home McKenzie before Anna Hinde launched a three-run homer, putting them up 9-1. FSU finished the game with nine hits, seven walks, and did not strike out.
