Brobbey strikes late to give Sunderland derby win
Brobbey strikes late to give Sunderland derby win Brian Brobbey struck late as Sunderland completed a comeback at the St James' Park after Anthony Gordon had given Newcastle United the lead. The Magpies came into this game looking to bounce back from the thrashing suffered at the hands of Barcelona in the Champions League midweek and the Tyne-Wear derby was an excellent opportunity for Eddie Howe's side to lift the mood. Newcastle were helped early on by the visitors when Melker Ellborg shifted the ball to Luke O'Nien whose pass out went straight to Nick Woltemade with Anthony Gordon providing the finishing touch.
Sunderland managed to get back into the game with Aaron Ramsdale making a fine save to deny Chemsdine Talbi but they almost conceded shortly before half-time when Lewis Hall crossed in for Dan Burn but the defender's headed effort struck the post. Howe was forced into a change shortly into the second half after Sven Botman suffered a head injury with Malick Thiaw taking his place. Shortly after, the Black Cats equalised.
Ramsdale was forced to make a save directly from a corner that was quickly pounced upon with Trai Hume having a shot that Habib Diarra tried to chest over the line before Talbi finished off to make it 1-1 with just under an hour gone. The hosts thought they'd taken the lead again in the 75th minute when Thiaw headed in only for the goal to be disallowed with a Newcastle player impeding Ellborg from an offside position. Sunderland snatched the winning goal late on when Granit Xhaka fed in Enzo Le FÊe who took the ball to the byline before pulling it back for Brian Brobbey to finish in the 90th minute of the game.
Newcastle couldn't push for an equaliser meaning their local rivals jumped ahead of them in the table â a difficult week for the Magpies.
