Head coach Dave Hollenbeck helped bring West Central its first state title in 25 years in his first season after a win over Sioux Falls Christian.

RAPID CITY — It was a celebration 25 years in the making, but one that people in Hartford could feel coming from the beginning of the year. The West Central boys basketball team completed a perfect 25-0 season to win the SDHSAA Class A boys basketball state championship after beating Sioux Falls Christian 66-56 on Saturday, March 21. "I'm real excited for the whole community," West Central head coach Dave Hollenbeck said.

"When we started this, we said, 'Let's do something not just as a team, but for the whole community. ' I met with my seniors when I got to town. That was my first meeting.

I told them what we needed to do culture wise, what we needed to do strategically, and they bought in the whole time. " This was Hollenbeck's first season at the helm of the Trojans' program after 532 wins and six state championships over 29 years at St. Thomas More in Rapid City.

West Central started pulling away in the third thanks to Connor Mebius. The star junior was limited in the first half due to foul trouble, but he scored 18 second-half points and was super efficient to help the Trojans get ahead. "In the third quarter, when we settled down Mebius got to the lane and we got some kick outs," Hollenbeck said.
