Yankees make Randal Grichuk, Oswaldo Cabrera, Max Schuemann decisions | Who’s gone, who’s left
The Yankees are close to finalizing their season-opening, 26-man roster.
LAKELAND, Fla. — While the Yankees were still pondering their final bench spot this week, non-roster outfielder Randal Grichuk forced their hands. Grichuk had a Friday opt out in the minor-league deal that he signed on Feb.
25, and the day before his agent informed Yankees that he would use it if Grichuk wasn’t assured he’d be on the Opening Day roster. That led to a meeting on Friday with Aaron Boone and Grichuk. Everything was tabled for a day, then Grichuk was informed on Saturday that will be with the Yankees for Wednesday’s season opener in San Francisco.
With Grichuk making the team, the Yankees cut four position players on Saturday. Infielder Paul DeJong and first baseman/outfielder Seth Brown were reassigned to the minor-league camp, while infielder/outfielders Oswaldo Cabrera and Max Scheumann were optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The Yankees also farmed out reliever Yovanny Cruz after their 3-1 loss to the Tigers.
The Yankees still have one more position player to drop and it’ll be infielder/outfielder Jorbit Vivas, who is out of options and likely will be designated for assignment. The Yankees’ season-opening four-man bench will be catcher J. C.
