How ASU wrestlers fared at NCAA Championships
The Arizona State wrestling team concluded its season at the NCAA Championships. Here's how the wrestlers finished.
Several Arizona State wrestlers had solid showings at the NCAA Championships in Cleveland, Ohio. Redshirt sophomore Nicco Ruiz (165 pounds) and graduate student David Szuba (heavyweight) were named All-Americans. Ruiz finished fourth overall, while Szuba finished seventh overall in the final day of the championship on March 21.
Ruiz dropped his quarterfinal match, but rallied in the round of 12 to eventually compete in the third-place match. He fell 7-2 to No. 12 seed Cesar Alvan, finishing fourth overall.
Ruiz finished the season with 28 wins, including 13 ranked wins, and was the Big 12 champion in his weight class. Szuba fought for his All-American status, putting together three consecutive wins in the consolation bracket. He became the seventh consecutive ASU heavyweight to be an All-American dating back to 2020.
Szuba fell short in a 7-0 decision against No. 8 seed Ben Kueter (Iowa), but won 6-0 over No. 18 seed Christian Carroll (Wyoming) for his final collegiate match.
