Alabama pitcher Tyler Fay comments on historic no-hitter vs Florida
Alabama baseball recorded its first solo no-hitter in over 80 years Friday. Here's what Tyler Fay said about his masterpiece vs. SEC rival Florida.
Alabama fans had more than just a win in March Madness to celebrate Friday night. Until Friday, it had been a while since an Alabama baseball pitcher last threw a solo no-hitter -- a long while. According to the university's Sports Information Department, the last solo no-hitter by an Alabama pitcher had been on April 24, 1942, over 80 years ago.
The drought came to an end when the Crimson Tide (16-7 overall, 1-3) blanked the 14th-ranked Florida Gators , 6-0, at Sewell-Thomas Stadium in Tuscaloosa behind a complete-game no-hitter from right-hander Tyler Fay. Fay used a career-high 132 pitches to strike out 13 Florida (19-4, 3-1) hitters. He allowed only two runners to reach base, both via walks.
Cash Strayer reached with one out in the top of the second inning, and Kyle Jones reached with two out in the sixth. Fay, a redshirt junior with high MLB draft hopes, ended the night by striking out six of the final nine batters he faced. The final out came on a fly ball from Gators leading hitter Brendan Lawson.
"It was just disbelief, honestly," Fay told SEC Network about his reaction to the final out. "I looked up in I think the fifth inning and realized that they didn't have any hits yet. I just kept going.
