Ron Bellamy, a popular former Michigan player who most recently worked as receivers coach for the Wolverines, is closing in on a deal for an off-field position on new Michigan head coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff. The job will allow him to work in recruiting, and will be involved with NIL and with donors. Bellamy, 44, has not yet signed a contract, a source confirmed to The Detroit News, but the deal is expected to be finalized this weekend.

After former head coach Sherrone Moore was fired last December, Whittingham was hired 10 days later on Dec. 26, but he initially only retained three former Michigan coaches: Tony Alford, Lou Esposito and Kerry Coombs.

Before returning to Michigan, Bellamy was head coach at West Bloomfield High for 11 years and won the Division I state championship in 2020. While a player at Michigan, Bellamy started 25 of the 36 games at receiver and had 67 receptions for 888 yards and nine touchdowns, including 46 catches for 530 yards and five touchdowns as a senior. After graduating from Michigan in 2023, Bellamy signed with the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.

He was on the Dolphins practice squad in 2003 and 2004 and was with the Baltimore Ravens (2005) and Detroit Lions (2007-08). Bellamy earned a master’s degree in education from Wayne State in 2011.
