Michigan football set to hire Ron Bellamy into front office role

Ron Bellamy, a former player at U-M (1998-2002) and WR coach the past 4 years (2022-25) is set to be finalized as next director of player personnel.

A familiar face is rejoining the Michigan football program in a new role. Ron Bellamy, the former wide receivers coach under the previous two head coaches, is set to join the front office under new head coach Kyle Whittingham, a source with knowledge of the situation told the Free Press under the condition of anonymity given the deal has not been announced publicly. There is a "small detail" left to work out in the contract, the Free Press is told, but the expectation is that the announcement will be made in the near future.

Bellamy spent the past five seasons on U-M's staff, his first with the safeties (2021) before the next four years leading the wide receivers (2022-25). During his time on staff, two different players in the room earned All-Big Ten status including Ronnie Bell (third team, 2021) and Roman Wilson (second team, 2023) who finished top 10 in the nation's in touchdown receptions (12). He also played a key role in recruiting Andrew Marsh, who is expected to be a star at Michigan after what was a standout freshman season in 2025.

While the wide receiver position was not extremely productive in recent seasons, Bellamy, who was a former wide receiver himself at Michigan (1999-2002) was among the most liked and respected coaches in the building both by players and staff. Additionally, he was the former head coach at West Bloomfield for 11 years, playing a key role in turning the Lakers into a power, including his final season, 2020, when he led West Bloomfield to a 41-0 State Championship win over Davison at Ford Field.

He led West Bloomfield to the playoffs in his final seven seasons at the helm — the program had made just two in its history before he took over. Now, Bellamy will work in the front office as part of the personnel department under new GM Dave Peloquin, providing another tie to the Midwest for a staff that primarily comes from the west coast and a familiar face for players who remain in the program. Michigan cleaned house in its personnel department last month, when it parted ways with general manager Sean Magee, director of player personnel Albert Karschnia, director of on campus recruiting Kayli Johnson and the director of recruiting Sam Popper, the last of whom told the Free Press he was set to begin a new role as associate general manager at San Diego State.
