T100 races consist of a 2km swim, 80km bike ride and 18km run, with Fullagar finishing in three hours, 28 minutes and 53 seconds. The 25-year-old, who led after the swim, eventually came in a minute behind winner Taylor Knibb of America, while Switzerland's Imogen Simmonds (3:33.

11) was third. "When I wasn't suffering, I was having a lot of fun," said Fullagar. "I think you could tell I was a rookie out there.

"A lot of mistakes but I was here to learn a lot and have a lot of fun and considering I'm 16,000km away from home it felt like a home race at times so I'm just grateful to be here. " This year's championship consists of four women's only races, with the same for the men, before both join up for the final event in Qatar in December. An athlete's overall points tally will be made up of their three best results plus their score in the Qatar final.

The next women's T100 will take place in Spain on 23 May.
