Mar. 20—BEMIDJI — There will be two new Bemidji High School winter sports coaches in 2026-27. Activities director Kristen McRae announced on Friday afternoon that girls hockey head coach Mike Johnson and girls basketball coach Darin Schultz have each stepped down from their respective positions.
Johnson is retiring after an eight-year stint with the Lumberjacks. He helped BHS get back to the state tournament for the first time since 2007 this season. Bemidji beat Moorhead 4-3 in the Section 8AA championship game.
A 1984 BHS graduate, Johnson was hired ahead of the 2018-19 season to replace Casey Reieson. He posted a record of 88-107-11, with his first winning season coming in 2022-23. Johnson helped lift the Jacks out of the basement in 8AA and posted four straight seasons above .
