The Houston Oilers were in town for a rare trip north, and in a win over the Bears, Dishman secured the first interception of what would become a Pro Bowl career. It felt like a beginning, even then. Decades later, the setting has changed.

The routine has not. We meet at The Breakfast Klub, just minutes from Texas Southern University, where Dishman is now simply known as “Coach. ” It is a quiet March morning, but his day is already well underway.

By 8 a. m. , he has been up for three hours.
