Jason Licht says Lavonte David decision still open

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers could still see a familiar face return to their defense in 2026. According to ESPN’s Jenna Laine , Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht said veteran linebacker Lavonte David has not yet informed the team of his decision regarding a potential 15th season. Licht added that the organization is giving David the time he needs while still maintaining communication with him, leaving the door open for a possible return if David would like to run it back one more time for Tampa Bay.

David, who has been a cornerstone of the Buccaneers’ defense for over a decade, remains one of the most respected players in franchise history and is a Super Bowl-winning linebacker. Tampa Bay has already begun preparing for the future at the position after signing veteran linebacker Alex Anzalone in free agency. The former Detroit Lion is expected to take on a significant role in what could be a transitional period for the Buccaneers’ defense.

Even with that addition, David’s presence would still carry weight both on and off the field. His leadership and experience in Todd Bowles’ system have been key components of the team’s defensive identity over the years. The Bucs already lost a longtime veteran on the offensive side of the ball in Mike Evans, who is now with the San Francisco 49ers.

Can this team afford to lose the leader on the other side of the ball? For now, the decision rests with David, but the Buccaneers have made it clear they would welcome him back if he chooses to continue his career.
