Wright State has spent nearly four decades as a Division I basketball program. If the Raiders can find a way to upset Virginia Friday afternoon, they'll notch the first men's NCAA Tournament win outside the First Four since the program was crushing Division II competition in the early- to mid-1980s. Wright State stacked wins under longtime coach Ralph Underhill as a D2 power, but its jump to the highest level of the sport has brought only five NCAA Tournament appearances in 39 seasons.
While the program earned a play-in victory in 2022 over Bryant University, every game the team has played as part of the field of 64 has ended in a defeat of 17 points or more.
