The majority of Big Ten basketball teams handled business against their opening opponents in the NCAA Tournament. However, two teams fell in epic March Madness fashion. Nebraska managed to put together one of its better performances of the season and joined Illinois, Michigan, and Michigan State as a first-round winner, all while getting its first tournament win ever.
Here are the scores and the rest of my analysis from the Big Ten games in the NCAA Tournament from Day 1: No. 9 TCU 66-64 vs No. 8 Ohio State This was the thrilling game that kicked off everything for March Madness.
Bruce Thornton struggled from the field in this one, mustering up only 10 points, but most of his points came late in the game as he made clutch shots. No shots clutcher than Xavier Edmunds, who made the game-winning shot with 4 seconds left in this one. TCU did not have the elite scorer that Ohio State had heading into this matchup, but their great defense kept them in this one, and in the end, they were the offense that prevailed, making more of the big shots needed to win.
No. 4 Nebraska 76-47 vs No. 13 Troy Out of all the teams in the Big Ten competing in March Madness, I thought the safest bet to get upset was going to be Nebraska; instead, they dominated a really underrated Troy team the entire game.
