Eliezer Delbrey career started in promising fashion and he played four years for the Classical boys basketball team to chase championships and create a legacy. And with his senior season behind him, Delbrey has added to it.

One of the best players in the history of the Purple program, Delbrey had a record-breaking senior season this winter. He was the state’s most consistent scorer and a terror on the defensive end and after a stellar season, he was rewarded justly, being named as the 2025-26 Gatorade Rhode Island Boys Basketball Player of the Year. Two years into his career, it was hard to imagine Delbrey would have an opportunity to win the award.

He was a terrific scorer as a freshman and earned All-State honors in his sophomore season, helping Classical win the state title. But top-end talent rarely sticks around for four seasons. Delbrey was different, choosing to play high school basketball and create a legacy for himself as one of Providence’s all-time great high school players.

While Classical didn’t get another title – the Purple lost in the quarterfinal rounds of both the Division I and State Tournament this winter – it wasn’t for lack of trying. Delbrey had a huge year for Classical, becoming the program’s all-time leading scorer while becoming the ninth player in state history to clear the 2,000-point career scoring mark. He finished the season averaging 27.
